Sena Jurinac  was born in Bosnia and studied in Austria where she made her debut as Mimi in La Boheme. In 1944 she first sang with the Vienna State Opera. Her final performance with the company was in 1982, after which she was to become an honorary member until her death.

In 1946 she debuted in London's Covent Garden singing Dorabella. The following year she performed for the first time at the prestigious Salzburg festival, and was soon to become an established performer at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival in the UK.
