Paavo Berglund, the Finnish conductor, and an authority on the composer Sibelius, has died.

Berglund enjoyed an impressive career spanning five decades, and was principal conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (1962-1971) and of the Helsinki Philharmonic (1975-1979).

In 1978 he made his New York debut the American Symphony Orchestra at the Carnegie Hall, in a concert of Shostakovich and Sibelius.

Since the 1990s he has become a regular guest conductor in the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra. In 2002 joined the Conductor Collegium of the Russian National Orchestra. He has also worked with many other prestigious orchestras throughout the world, and in 2002 joined the Conductor Collegium of the Russian National Orchestra.

He is considered an authority on the composer Sibelius, by such luminaries as such as Sir Simon Rattle.

Sergei Polunin announces shock exit from the Royal Ballet

Sergei Polunin, the 21-year-old star of the Royal Ballet, has stunned the dance world by abruptly leaving the company. The Ukrainian dancer, who two years ago became the Royal Ballet's youngest ever principal, told its director Monica Mason on Tuesday afternoon that he was quitting with immediate effect.

Polunin's dancing has been critically acclaimed for its technical and expressive brilliance, with the Observer's critic Luke Jennings describing him in October as "one of the most gifted dancers of his generation". Others have compared him to Nureyev and Baryshnikov. (Guardian)

The Dutch harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt has died

Gustav Leonhardt , the highly renowned Dutch keyboard player, conductor,musicologist, teacher and editor, has died. He was a leading figure in the movement toperform music on period instruments.

According to Musical America, Leonhardt gave hislast public performance on December 12, 2011 at the Theatre des Bouffes inNorth Paris. Thereafter he announced his retirement due to ill-health, andcancelled all of his 2012 engagements. (w)

The recent death of Shelagh Delaney (A TASTE OF HONEY, A LION IN LOVE) reminded us of the role kitchen sink dramas began to play in raising, exploring and confronting social and political issues in Britain in the late 1950s.

John Osborne’s LOOK BACK IN ANGER (1956) with its cramped setting and tirade against the mediocrity of middle-class English life was, if not the first, certainly the one that established the importance of the genre in popular culture. It is said that the audience gasped when, for the first time, they actually saw an ironing board on the stage!!

How times have changed now that the genre is so widely used across theatre, television and film. Take a look at a range of ‘kitchen sink’ and ‘angry young men’ images from first runs, original film stills and more contemporary productions.

Good news for Green Day fans! The band's hugely popular punk rock musical American Idiot will be opening in London in December 2012. We know it's many months away, but considering it opened on Broadway back in early 2010, seeing it reach the UK is a date worth waiting for!

American Idiot's book and lyrics are by Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, and is based on their album of the same name. The show won two Tony Awards in 2010 for Best Musical and Best Scenic Design of a Musical, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album February 2011.

ArenaPAL remember the legendary Freddie Mercury, who died 20 years ago today.

Freddie was an iconic British rock musician, singer and songwriter who was known primarily as the compelling frontman of rock band Queen. He penned numerous classic hits such as the anthemic We Will rock You, We Are the Champions and Another One Bites the Dust, as well as the epic Bohemian Rhapsody.

He died on 24 November 1991 of bronchopneumonia brought on by AIDS, only one day after publicly acknowledging he had the disease.

Sena Jurinac was born in Bosnia and studied in Austriawhere she made her debut as Mimi in La Boheme. In 1944 she first sang with theVienna State Opera. Her final performance with the company was in 1982, afterwhich she was to become an honorary member until her death.

In 1946 she debuted in London's Covent Garden singingDorabella. The following year she performed for the first time at the prestigiousSalzburg festival, and was soon to become an established performer at theGlyndebourne Opera Festival in the UK.

Michael Garrick was a gifted self-taught musician who after forminghis first quartet whilst studying English Literature at UCL, went on to becomemusical director of the "Poetry & Jazz in Concert" road show.

Best known for his jazz-choral works, he went on to workwith many respected jazz musicians, poets and singers and taught jazz RoyalAcademy of Music and at Trinity College of Music, London.

In 2010 he was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen.

The Swedish baritone opera singer Ingvar Wixell has died aged 80, after an acclaimed worldwide career.

Wixell debuted in 1965 in the Royal Swedish Opera's production of The Magic Flute. His UK debut was at the Royal Opera House in 1960.

Matilda, a novel by the beloved children's author Roald Dahl, was first published in 1988 and has since become a staple in generations of kids reading lists. Last year Tim Minchin and the Royal Shakespeare Comapny brought the story to life with a hilarious and touching stage musical.

Jouney's End, modern and classic production images

Journey's end is a staple produciton in wartime drama. Set in the trenchs during the Great War, it proved a hard sell for writer RC Sherriff in 1928. With an all male cast - meaning no leading lady to draw the crowds - and a subject matter not suited to the escapism most theatres were promoting at the time, it was an unexpected hit with post-WWI audiences.

Currently being revived at the Duke of York's Theatre in London's West End, after retuning from a UK tour, the play still strikes a chord in contemporary audiences, young and old alike.

ArenaPAL are pleased to share with you a glimpse into the archives (Mander and Mitchenson Theatre Collection), plus new production shots from more modern performances.

In a great night for British theatre, the Broadway productions of recent UK theatrical gems War Horse and Jerusalem walked away with 6 Tony Awards between them.

War Horse, original performed at the National Theatre in London, won every category for which it was nominated in, including best play, direction, design, sound and lighting.

X-Ray Spex singer Poly Styrene has died age 53

Poly Styrene, real name Marian Joan Elliott-Said, was the lead singer of pioneering 1970/80s punk band X-Ray Spex. In 2011 she released her solo album Generation Indigo to critical acclaim.

Her musical career began at a Sex Pistols gig where she was inspired to form her own band, X-Ray Spex, whose 1978 seminal debut album Germfree Adolescents (EMI) remains a highly influential example of new wave punk rock.

Styrene died age 53 after a battle with spine and breast cancer. She is survived by her daughter Celeste Bell-Dos Santos, who she collaborated with on several musical projects including her latest album.

Dame Elizabeth Taylor, British / American Hollywood icon has died in Los Angeles at the age of 79.

Applying make-up before shooting Cleopatra at the Cinecitta Fim studios,Rome in 1962.

Her most famous films included National Velvet, Cleopatra and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? She was nominated for Oscars in 1958, 1959 and 1960 for Raintree County, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Suddenly, Last Summer respectively finally wining one in 1961 for her performance in Butterfield 8.

Being admired by husband Welsh actor Richard Burton.

She was equally well-known for her glamour and on/off-screen partnership with Richard Burton, one of seven husbands and eight marriages. She married Burton twice in 1964 and again in 1975.

In rehearsal for the opening performance of Marlowe's Doctor Faustus at the Oxford Playhouse.

In her prime, she was arguably one of the world's greatest actresses and most beautiful women. Fellow British actress Joan Collins called her "the last of the True Hollywood Icons".

She appeared alongside Roddy McDowall in Lassie Come Home in 1943 and a year later achieved her first great success in National Velvet. Her colourful private life, screen success and Aids charity work ensured she was never far from the spotlight since finding fame at the age of 12.

With her first child Michael Wilding, born January 6 1953.

In addition to her four children - Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding, Maria Burton-Carson and Liza Todd-Tivey - Dame Elizabeth is survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.(BBC)

Conductor Yakov Kreizberg has died at age 51

Conductor Yakov Kreizberg has died at age 51.

Widely sought-after by the world's leading orchestras, he held posts with the Theater Krefeld Mönchengladbach, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Komische Oper in Berlin and the Wiener Symphoniker.

At the time of his death, Kreizberg was chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic and Netherlands Chamber Orchestras. He last conducted them in Amsterdam on February 14 2011.

The Russian-born Austrian/American conductor died at his home in Monte Carlo on 15 March 2011, after battling a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, the conductor, Amy Andersson and their two sons.

John Barry, film score composer and conductor famed for his work on numerous James Bond themes, has died aged 77.

His 007 repertoire includes work on 12 scores including the celebrated 'Goldfinger' soundtrack.

Other well known pieces by Barry include music for films Midnight Cowboy, Zulu, The Ipcress File and Born Free.

Winner of the Fellowship Award at the BAFTA Film Awards 2005.

He also composed music for stage musicals, including 1965's Passion Flower Hotel and later successfully collaborating with writer Don Black on Billy (based on Billy Liar and starring Michael Crawford) and in 2003's Brighton Rock.

Zoe Dominic OBE – Britain’s leading Arts photographer whose visual interpretation of theatre, opera, dance and film became synonymous with all the great names and productions from the 1950s through to the 1980s, has died.

She began her career in a male dominated industry and rose to become one of the most prestigious photographers in her field.

Zoe was official photographer for the Royal Ballet as well as documenting virtually all of the major international companies in the performing arts.

In 2006 she was awarded an OBE for her services to Arts Photography.

Peter Hofmann German operatic tenor, rock and musical theatre singer has died aged 66

German tenor Peter Hofmann, who became famous for his performances of Richard Wagner operas, has died aged 66.

The Rheinische Post newspaper quoted his brother Fritz Hofmann saying he died at a hospital in Wunsiedel in Bavaria. The mass-circulation newspaper Bild also reported Hofmann's death after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

"Peter Hofmann, unlike few others, bridged the gap between entertainment and serious music," Culture Minister Bernd Neumann said in a statement. "His accomplishments as rock singer in the Phantom of the Opera, but even more his exceptionally gifted interpretations of Wagner, are unforgettable."

Hofmann made his name performing at the annual Bayreuth festival celebrating the music of Richard Wagner. He toured stages across the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and performed as the main character of the Phantom of the Opera musical in Hamburg.

His international breakthrough came in 1976, when he played Siegmund in Wagner's "Ring" cycle at Bayreuth.

Starting in 1990, he starred 300 times in the German version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Phantom of the Opera, performed in Hamburg. He also hosted a TV show in Germany and performed Elvis Presley songs on a tour across Europe.

Hofmann had Parkinson's for several years and stopped performing in 1999. He is survived by his wife and three children. (AP)

Shirley Verrett, dramatic mezzo-soprano singer, has died aged 79

American soprano Shirley Verrett, one of the top opera singers of the 1970s and 1980s, has died at the age of 79.

Born in New Orleans, she was known for the intensity of her performances and for battling racial prejudice over the course of her four-decade career. First known as Shirley Verrett-Carter, she made her professional debut in 1957 and went on to sing in New York, Paris, London, and San Francisco. Fans at La Scala in Milan once dubbed her "the Black Callas".

Best known for singing the works of Verdi and Donizetti, Verrett also appeared on Broadway in a 1994 production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical Carousel.

Her autobiography, I Never Walked Alone, was published in 2003. Verrett had been suffering from heart trouble prior to her death on Friday in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is survived by Lou LoMonaco, her husband of 47 years, and their adopted daughter. (BBC News)

Russian conductor Rudolf Barshai has died in Switzerland aged 86

Russian-born conductor Rudolf Barshai, who was a contemporary of composers Shostakovich and Prokofiev, has died at his home in Switzerland aged 86.

He had been in ill health for some time but continued to work until the final days of his life, his agent said. Barshai studied composition with Dmitri Shostakovich and later recorded a complete cycle of his symphonies.

He left his homeland in 1975 after Shostakovich's death and went on to conduct in London, Paris and Berlin. In 1955, he founded the Moscow Chamber Orchestra which he led until he emigrated from the Soviet Union.

In 2000, he completed work on the orchestration of Mahler's 10th Symphony and shortly before his death, completed his arrangements on The Art of Fugue by Bach. A spokeswoman for his agent said Barshai "considered it to be a lifetime achievement".

He also played voila as a soloist and in 1945, was a founding member of the Borodin Quartet. "The music world has lost a true great," his agent's spokeswoman added. (BBC News)

Ari Up, lead singer of The Slits, has died aged 48

Vocalist Ari Up, of British all-girl punk band The Slits, has died aged 48 following a "serious illness", her stepfather John Lydon has announced. The death of the singer, real name Arianna Forster, was revealed in a statement on Lydon's website which said she would be "sadly missed".

Punk-reggae act The Slits were known for tracks including their cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine and their debut album Cut, out in September 1979, went to number 30 in the UK. Munich-born Up was 14 when she formed the band with members including Palmolive - real name Paloma Romero - in 1976.

Joan Sutherland, one the most acclaimed sopranos of the 20th century, who followed the path of Maria Callas and helped revitalize the bel canto repertory of early-19th-century Italian opera, died in Switzerland on Sunday, according to published reports. She was 83.

After Ms. Sutherland’s 1960 Italian debut in Venice, the country’s notoriously picky critics dubbed this Australian-born soprano “La Stupenda” (“The Stupendous One”). For 40 years the name endured with opera-lovers around the world. Even those with reservations about aspects of Ms. Sutherland’s artistry readily agreed that she was a stupendous soprano.

Her singing was founded on astonishing technique. Her voice was evenly produced throughout an enormous range, from a low G to effortless flights above high C. She could spin lyrical phrases with elegant legato, subtle colorings and expressive nuances. Her sound was warm, vibrant and resonant, without any forcing. Indeed, her voice was so naturally large that at the start of her career Ms. Sutherland seemed destined to become a Wagnerian dramatic soprano. (New York Times)

American acting legend Tony Curtis has died peacefully in his bed aged 85.

He played a variety of roles, from light comedy, such as the musician on the run from gangsters in Some Like It Hot, to serious dramatic roles, such as an escaped convict in The Defiant Ones, which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. From 1949, he appeared in more than 120 films and made frequent television appearances.

The actor was married six times, including to Psycho star Janet Leigh, with whom he had two children including actress daughter Jamie Lee Curtis.

This new full evening work titled AfterLight contains the solo AfterLight (Part One) which was shown at Sadler’s Wells in October 2009 as part of In the Spirit of Diaghilev. It features Satie's music, Gnosiennes 1-4.

Patricia Neal, American Actress and ex-wife of Roald Dahl, has died aged 84

Patricia Neal, Academy Award winning American actress of stage and screen, has died from lung cancer aged 84.

During the filming of The Fountainhead in 1949, Neal had an affair with her married co-star, Gary Cooper. The relationship had ended by 1950 on the insistance of Cooper's wife. Neal became pregnant by Cooper, but he persuaded her to have an abortion.

In 1953 she married English author Roald Dahl. They had 5 children together before divorcing in 1983. Their family was struck by tradegy when one of there children was grievously injured, and later when another died of measles aged just 4 months.

While pregnant in 1965, Neal suffered three-burst cerebral aneurysms, and was in a coma for three weeks. Dahl directed her rehabilitation and she subsequently relearned to walk and talk ("I think I'm just stubborn, that's all"). On August 4, 1965, she gave birth to a healthy daughter, Lucy.

Neal's last screen role was in 2009's Flying High co-starring Billy Ray Cyrus.

Tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson has died today aged 69

One of England's most distinguished singers, Anthony Rolfe-Johnson was a student of Ellis Keeler at the Guildhall School of Music in London, and later of Vera Rosza. He gained experience singing in the chorus and appearing in small roles at the Glyndebourne Festival between 1972 and 1976. In 1973 he made his formal operatic debut with the English Opera Group in Iolante. In 1978 he made his first appearance with the English National Opera in London as Don Ottavio.

He was awarded a CBE in the 1992 Queen's Birthday Honours.

Classical conductor Charles Mackerras dies at 84

Charles Mackerras, a gifted musician who conducted some of the world's leading orchestras, has died at the age of 84 after suffering from cancer.

Born in New York state to Australian parents, Mackerras was raised in Sydney but spent large parts of his adult life in Britain where he conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra and was music director at the English National Opera.

He returned to Sydney for the opening concert in the new Sydney Opera House in 1973 in which he conducted the Sydney Symphony with soprano Birgit Nilsson.

A much-travelled figure, Mackerras made frequent appearances at the San Francisco Opera and also had a long association with the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

"Conducting is persuading every musician in the orchestra to play it your way and with enthusiasm and willingness," Mackerras told the BBC in a recent interview.

His agent Robert Rattray said he was a giant of classical music who retained his ability to inspire fellow conductors and musicians into his later life.

"His knowledge and his enthusiasm was something he not only could convey to these orchestral players but to some of the most eminent figures in the classical music world."

Glyndebourne Opera Festival 2010 presents Mozart's black comedy Don Giovanni

Mozart’s second collaboration with the mercurial librettist Lorenzo da Ponte is among the very blackest of black comedies.

For its first new production of the opera in 10 years, Glyndebourne welcomes back the winning team of director Jonathan Kent and designerPaul Brown, while the conducting is shared between Festival Music Director, Vladimir Jurowski, and the new Music Director of Glyndebourne on Tour, Jakub Hruša.

In the title role is the great bass-baritone Gerald Finley, who has appeared in many Glyndebourne productions since joining the Chorus in 1986 – not least in the title role of Le nozze di Figaro at the opening of the new house in 1994. He has sung Don Giovanni to worldwide acclaim in New York, London, Paris, Vienna, Rome, Budapest and Prague. Finley is joined by Luca Pisaroni (Guglielmo in the 2006 Festival’s Così fan tutte) as Leporello, Kate Royal (the Governess in Jonathan Kent’s 2006 staging of The Turn of the Screw) as Donna Elvira, and the young Russian soprano Anna Samuil making her UK opera debut as Donna Anna.

The Bridge Project opens with Shakespeare's pastoral comedy As You Like It – a story full of wit and mischief, of power hungry siblings, girls playing boys, exiled love and foolery, which pairs hearty laughter with magical moments.

Sam Mendes was founder and Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse for a decade and has directed theatre at the RSC, National Theatre, plus in the West End and on Broadway. His film credits include American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road and the recent Away We Go.

Les Espoirs de Coronthie

Africa Oyé is the UK's largest free celebration of African music and culture and takes place annually in Liverpool. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength-to-strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand. Now in its nineteenth year, Africa Oyé continues to grow.

With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world.

This year over 25,000 revellers attended on Saurday alone, with many more over the whole weekend. This is more than double that of previous years.

Highlights of 2010 included: Boukman Eksperyans, Ti Coca, Carlou D, Victor Démé & the up-and-coming Les Espoirs de Coronthie

This rare London concert was be the first UK concert for Joan Jett and The Blackhearts in over 20 years. Die hard fans experienced the music of one of rock music’s best loved icons who is known by millions for her milestone rock anthems I Love Rock N’ Roll, Crimson and Clover, Bad Reputation, Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah), I Hate Myself For Loving You, Light of Day, Love Is Pain, and the seminal Runaways rock and roll classic Cherry Bomb.

Golden Girl Rue McClanahan has died of a stroke aged 76

Actress Rue McClanahan has died of a stroke aged 76. Famous for the role of the raunchy Southern belle Blanche Deveraux in the hit 80s/90s TV sitcom, The Golden girls, she will be remembered as a vivacious and much loved actress.

McClanahan, who underwent heart bypass surgery last year, is the third of the main cast members to pass away. Only Betty White remains, following the deaths of Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur, who died in 2008 and 2009.

McClanahan, who was born in Oklahoma, married six times and wrote a memoir in 2007 entitled My First Five Husbands... And The Ones Who Got Away.

Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro opens the Garsington Festival Opera 2010 season

The Garsington Opera 2010 season opens and closes with the production that launched the festival at Garsington Manor – Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro – in a revival by John Cox of his outstanding production which was a glorious highlight of the 2005 season. Douglas Boyd, whose Fidelio was a major success at Garsington in 2009, conducts a talented young cast.

Sri Lankan Kishani Jayasinghe, who recently received the Arts and Culture Award at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards, sings the Countess with the impressive young Australian baritone Grant Doyle as the Count. Another young baritone, James Oldfield, sings the title role with the outstanding soprano Sophie Bevan as his sweetheart. The brilliant Douglas Boyd, Music Director of the Manchester Camerata, conducts.

Dennis Hopper dies aged 74 - A Life in Pictures ...

Dennis Hopper, whose acting career spanned almost six decades, has died of prostate cancer aged 73.

His breakout role was in 1969 with the movie "Easy Rider," but his career began in the 1950s with live TV and co-starring roles in two films with James Dean. He was twice nominated for Oscars.

In the '50s he had roles in several TV shows and films, including "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) and "Giant" (1956). He became a Hollywood sensation for "Easy Rider," the 1969 film he directed and co-wrote in which he played a dissolute, countercultural biker.

Rambert's May visit to Sadler's Wells is a celebration of some of the world's most outstanding and popular choreographers. The Company honours the life and work of American dance icon, Merce Cunningham, with the UK revival première of his illustrious piece, RainForest.

With its electronic score by David Tudor and reflective silver pillows by Andy Warhol, it is a wonderful artefact from the 1960s; first performed in Buffalo, NY on 9 Mar 1968, by Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
